What I'm saying is that Todd McCarthy is not a man Variety should have lightly dismissed. He is the longest-serving and best-known member of the paper's staff, and if they made such a drastic decision, we are invited to wonder if Variety itself will long survive. Link
I can't believe it, but Variety has just axed chief film critic Todd McCarthy. McCarthy is more than a film critic - I'd call him a film analyst, someone who examines the artistic and box office success of a film with scientific curiosity and accuracy. There's no one like him, and his position with Variety gave that magazine its editorial authority. Ebert asks a legitimate question. If they can't keep him, can they keep staying in business. Ack.
