This is the Comic-Con edition of BoTT with a review of the trailer reboot for British comic Judge Dredd. Done as a big budget sci-fi in the nineties with Sylvester Stallone, this version is much grittier, still bringing back the setting of Mega City One which is the last holdout of civilization in a post-apocolyptic world (getting old), with the entire legal system rolled into a police force that is judge/jury and executioner.
The villain (female) is a crime lord of a housing block pushing an addictive drug which is the kind of urban threat popular in the eighties when crack was spreading through inner cities. The comic has origins with that decade, so if this is staying close to source material, it still looks dated.
With grit and realism, and a laconic deep voice under a mask, hints at a cheap version of Nolan's Batman. But with threats like "Negotiations over," and bullet-time action for a drug that slows time, this seen-it-before material predicts a movie to catch only on that extra long flight. Maybe next year, on your way to Comic-Con.Opening September 21, 2012, Verdict: Skip
