The new James Bond should top the box office this weekend followed by the dancing penguins of "Happy Feet." Yesterday, I trashed "Happy Feet" because the trailer looked so unpromising. But going over the reviews from the website metacritic, it looks like the film could be a sharper entertainment. It's always better to be surprised than let down from hype. I hope I'm wrong.
1. Casino Royale
2. Happy Feet
3. Borat
4. Flushed Away
5. The Santa Clause 3
It's another weekend of uneventful movie openings. "Borat" will take in more laughs, while the "The Santa Clause 3" will bring in early holiday shoppers.
After a string of great premieres the last few weeks, we get a breather of mediocre fare this weekend. Holiday films are invading the schedule. I'm going with "Flushed Away" over the tired sequel to the "Santa Clause."
Because of Halloween, "Saw III" should slice through the competition to take the top spot. "Flags of our Fathers" made headlines for not meeting studio expectations, but since it has good reviews, I still think it will build an audience through word of mouth.
This is another weekend of eagerly anticipated premieres. "The Prestige" should eke out the number one position from "Flags of our Fathers" because of the popularity of its stars. But I expect Eastwood's film to have longer legs through the end of the year.
I'm expecting the sequel to "The Grudge" to take the lead at the box office this weekend. "The Departed" should lose ground, but the "Texas Chainsaw" prequel should hold steady. We're close to Halloween. People like being scared this time of year.
We're in the middle of the fall premiere schedule with many films coming this month that have potential to garner critical praise and awards. This weekend alone, has a new Martin Scorsese picture, and smaller prestige films in limited release. I think "The Departed" will top the box office, but not meet studio expectations for the audience intended to greet its star power. The film must be expensive. The horror "Texas Chainsaw" prequel could be a surprise come Monday.
"Jackass" will fall face first into first place this weekend. I think the Sean Penn film, "All the King's Men," will be a disappointment at the box office. It's gotten mixed reviews, and I don't think people are interested in politics, especially when there's midterm national elections coming and airwaves are starting to fill up with politicial hot air.
The football movie, "Gridiron Gang," will draw the most people this weekend. I was surprised by the number of people who went to see "Hollywoodland" last weekend. That should draw the curioius for film noir to see De Palma's latest, "The Black Dahlia," even though it hasn't gotten positive reviews.
I'm gonna say with kids back in school, they'll want to go to the movies this weekend to blow some steam. Therefore "The Covenant" should see some box office. I was surprised to see "The Illusionist" in the top five and predict it still has legs this weekend.
